FAQs

Below are a list of questions which we find that people often want to know the answer to. So if you’ve got a question, you should find the answer here. Don’t despair if you can’t find the answer here though as you can always give us a call on 0844 8000 222 or e-mail us at sales.info@rockuk.org and we’ll get back to you within 24 hours with an answer to your query.

How long can we hold a provisional booking?

Up to 14 days without a deposit. A booking is made over the phone directly to the Adventure Centre in question.

What do you recommend as leader/group ratios?

It depends on the type of group. For example a special needs school would normally increase their ratio of helpers. For the majority of groups, a good ratio is one leader for every 10, and then increase/decrease according to circumstances. We would never expect a group to bring less than one leader for every 14 young people to our centres.

Have your adventure centres been inspected, and if so, by who?

Yes we have regular inspections as part of the terms of licensing under the Adventure Activities Licensing Regulation 1996 (administered by Adventure Activities Licensing Service – AALS). Our Centres work very closely with their respective Environmental Health Officers to ensure the safe operation of each Centre. Further to this, we regularly arrange inspections of our facilities and activities by independent auditors, seeking specialist advice and carry out audits of our facilities.

Can leaders inspect our adventure centres themselves?

Yes – we actively encourage leaders to organise an exploratory and a pre residential visit to our centres to familiarise themselves with the facilities and site.

Can you provide us with written Risk Assessments for the adventure activities?

Yes – we are very happy to do this, and for leaders themselves to carry out Risk Assessments. Our written risk assessments for most of our centres are available on this web site – you can find them by visiting the risk assessment pages.

Would my group be expected to mix with other groups at your centres?

No (though you could by pre agreement with other groups leaders). Each group has their own self-contained accommodation. Facilities such as low ropes course, swimming pool and sports field are pre booked and not shared. Instructed activities likewise are not shared.

When are my group supervised?

Supervision and instruction takes place on the adventure activities, though you would be expected to involve your own leaders in a supervisory role, and be involved as participants in the adventure activities if you wished.

Do you have a Child Protection Policy?

Yes we do. Our policy regulates behaviour of all staff working on centres. We are registered with the Criminal Records Bureau to carry out checks on all staff whose work brings them into contact with children.

What happens if I have to cancel?

If you cancel outside of 20 weeks of your stay you would forfeit your deposit. If you cancel within 20 weeks you will be charged 50% of the minimum charge, within 10 weeks 75%, and within 6 weeks 100% of the minimum charge. We encourage groups to take out insurance that will cover in the event of unforeseen cancellation.

Do adventure activities still take place in the rain?

Most adventure activities have shelters and therefore can take place in most types of weather. Our activity centres supply a kit list, thereby ensuring that groups are able to adequately prepare in advance for their sessions.
